The freezer does not freeze: causes and ways to fix the failure

The task of the freezer is to properly freeze food to keep it fresh for a long time. Unfortunately, refrigeration equipment, like any other household appliance, can fail after a few years of use or even earlier. It does not depend on the brand of the refrigerator, whether it is LG, Samsung, Whirlpool, Electrolux, Bosch, etc.

Our refrigerator and freezer repair specialists will tell you what the reason might be.

Often there are situations when the freezer is working, but it does not freeze properly or does not work at all, and the food in it simply cools rather than freezes. It happens both in devices with the Know-Frost system and among classic refrigerators. Sometimes it can happen that one of the components is defective, and as a result, the freezer does not reach the temperature for freezing. What are the most common causes of cooling failure? How to diagnose and fix them?

The door seal is broken

The freezer may work normally, and the indicator shows the correct temperature, but the chamber door not closing tightly leads to a loss of cold. This is often caused by a dirty or damaged rubber seal. You can check the tightness of the door with a simple test.

Take a small piece of paper and insert it between the door and the freezer compartment so that its edge protrudes slightly outward. If it pulls out freely when the door is closed, there is a problem with the seal.

Solution: Clean the rubber gasket that prevents the door from fitting tightly. If it is damaged (cracks, tears) – replace the seal with a new one. If you do not know how to do this, contact an appliance repair service.

The dirty condenser of the unit

The condenser coils (grid) at the back of the refrigerator, through which the refrigerant circulates, can accumulate dust and dirt. If too much has accumulated, the cooling efficiency decreases, and therefore the freezer freezes poorly. This is due to the condenser’s inability to dissipate heat and maintain the desired temperature.

Solution: The condenser on the back outside of the unit should be checked. If the coils are very dirty, clean them with a dry cloth, a soft brush, or a vacuum cleaner using a crevice nozzle. Do not forget to clean this grill at least once every six months.

In modern models of refrigerators, it is recommended to set an additional mode for cleaning the ventilation grilles inside the freezer.

Evaporator fan damaged

A working evaporator fan motor provides cooling and proper circulation of cooled air in both the refrigerator and freezer compartments. If it fails, the cold air will stop flowing into the refrigerator compartment. Thus, a situation arises where the refrigerator itself does not freeze, but the freezer compartment works and continues to cool.

Solution: To make sure that the motor is working properly, turn the fan blades by hand. If they do not spin freely, then the motor is defective and needs to be replaced. You can try to replace it yourself, but it is better to call a refrigeration repairman.

The evaporator fan must not be blocked in any way, otherwise, the air will not circulate properly. Make sure that too much food is not stored inside the refrigerator and freezer, and that it is not close to the fan, blocking the airflow.

Broken condenser fan

The reason your freezer isn’t working may also be because the condenser fan motor is broken or underpowered. To check this, look at the blades of the appliance – perhaps something is blocking them, and the propeller does not rotate freely. Alternatively, the motor bearings may be faulty.

Solution: Check the motor with a multimeter for continuity in the circuit. If it is not, you need to replace this part. Look for a motor that is compatible with your freezer at specialty stores and install it.

But still, if the freezer does not freeze precisely because of a broken motor in the condenser fan, then the replacement of this part should be entrusted to a professional master of the service center.
