Most often, by “the refrigerator does not work” users mean the situation when the refrigerator does not freeze and the motor does not turn on. But sometimes it happens that there is no cold, but at the same time, it is clearly audible that the motor buzzes! That is the technique seems to work, but it does not fulfill its functions. At the same time, it is possible that:

– the freezer freezes, but the refrigerator compartment does not cool, this is the most common variant;
– the fridge compartment works but the freezer does not freeze;
– the compressor is working and humming, but both chambers do not freeze.
What is the reason for this behavior of the refrigerator, and needs the refrigerator repair San Diego , we will now understand?

1. Faulty defrost system in a No Frost refrigerator
In two-compartment No Frost refrigerators, the evaporator is in the freezer and works for both chambers. Frost forms on it during the cooling cycle. When the evaporator temperature becomes too low, the defrost heater is activated. It melts the frost, and the formed water is removed from the freezer into a special tub near the compressor motor, from where it then evaporates. As a result, there is no ice inside the freezer. The cold air is blown into the refrigerating compartment from the freezing chamber by the fan through special channels. If one or several elements of defrosting system break down, the freezer is pulled into the freezer by a snow coat. The air ducts from the freezer to the refrigerating compartment freeze, and as a result the upper chamber become warm.
Defrost system breakdowns are the most common reason why the refrigerator compartment won’t cool even though the motor is running.

2. The shutter in the No Frost refrigerator has failed.
The flow of cold air from the freezer evaporator to the refrigerator compartment is regulated by the air damper. At the moment when the air is blown into the refrigerating compartment by the fan, it opens. If the motor that drives it or the reed sensor that detects the position of the damper fails, the damper may be in the closed position. Consequently, cooled air from the evaporator does not flow into the cooling compartment and refrigerating compartment becomes warm.

3. the fan in the No Frost refrigerator is defective
Another element in No Frost refrigerator models that is responsible for getting cold air into the cooling compartment is the fan. As it rotates, it blows air from the freezer into the refrigerator compartment. If the fan breaks (the blades break off or the motor burns out), the air does not flow into the upper compartment, and the freezer does not freeze. Often the fan failure is associated with the failure of the defrosting system. For this reason, the freezer gets covered with ice. The fan catches the snow coat with its blades, and as a result either the blades break, or its motor burns out due to high load.

4. Thermostat or thermostat of the refrigerator compartment in the two-compressor refrigerator is defective
The temperature in the refrigerator compartment in electronically controlled models is measured by the temperature sensor. If it fails and the signal from it does not go to the control board, the refrigerator’s electronics “don’t understand” what the compartment temperature is and will not turn on the cooling. Therefore, in a two-compressor refrigerator, only the freezer compartment motor works, and the refrigerator compartment does not turn on.

The sensor itself fails in the thermistor, the wiring breaks, or the contacts get burnt or oxidized.

In refrigerators with electromechanical control, the thermostat regulates the temperature. Two compressor models have two of them. If the refrigerator compartment thermostat is out of order and does not turn on cooling, then the refrigerator only operates the freezer compartment, and the refrigerator compartment does not even turn on.

In thermoregulators, more often than not, there is a depressurization of the bellows or damage to the contact group of the node.

5. Control unit is out of order

The control unit of the fridge is a microcircuit, in which the whole algorithm of functioning of the equipment is put. Quite often the boards’ malfunction because of voltage jumps: some radio elements burn out, and the contacts/tracks in the control module get oxidized or burned out.
If the refrigerator compressor works, but the freezing chamber does not freeze, the problem is most likely in the circuit of the air damper (in No Frost refrigerators), fan (in models with No Frost), or temperature sensor of the freezing chamber on the board.

Motor noise does not always mean that the refrigerator is freezing properly. If you hear that the refrigerator compressor works, but does not cool one of the chambers or both at once, it is better to ask for help from specialists. The range of reasons why appliances don’t work is quite varied.
