THE OVEN IN THE GAS STOVE DOESN’T LIGHT UP OR GO OUT

Gas stoves, and ovens, in particular, are extremely reliable. You can still find products with 50+ years of operating experience that work well. Alas, not all appliance owners are so lucky. Like any other oven, gas ovens can malfunction and break down. If your oven:

Why the gas oven does not work – causes that you can fix yourself
To begin with, let’s consider the most common situations when the gas in the oven does not burn or goes out, which are no breakdowns. And we will tell you what to do in such cases.

Gas is blocked. Check to see if the gas valve to the stove and oven, or to the oven if you have a freestanding oven, is open.

Lack of air. Because of a possible lack of oxygen during ignition, most appliance manufacturers advise igniting the oven with the door open.
The gas control flame sensor does not have time to warm up. Modern ovens are equipped with a gas control system. If the temperature sensor does not detect an increase in temperature, it cuts off the gas supply. The sensor does not operate immediately; it takes time to detect changes. Hold the gas knob a little longer than usual (up to 15 seconds). Also, remember to turn the oven to maximum when you turn it on: this will speed up the heating up of the sensor and the ignition of the oven.

The oven burner is dirty. If soot has gotten into the burner’s multiple gas holes, the fuel will not flow or will not flow sufficiently. In this case, you will see that the burner will fire unevenly. Because of this, the flame may be too weak or absent at the location of the temperature sensor of the gas control system. Then the system will shut off the gas after releasing the knob, thinking that the oven has gone out. To solve the problem, remove the burner and clean the gas holes where the flame burns poorly or has no flame at all.

The burner is misaligned. If difficulties with the ignition of the oven appeared after washing the burner – most likely the cause is the wrong installation. Unevenly installed, it may burn unevenly, be smoky, or have an orange flame. This results in insufficient heat exposure of the flame to the gas control temperature sensor, causing the automatic system solenoid valve to shut off the gas after releasing the knob. Check that the burner is correctly installed and, in case of misalignment, correct it.

The gas pressure in the pipeline has dropped. When the pressure drops, the weak flame intensity cannot heat up the flame sensor and the gas control cuts off the gas supply. This situation is extremely rare in centralized networks but is common with cylinder gas when it runs out. To fix the problem you need to refill the cylinder or replace it with a new one.

Pay attention! If the oven burner goes out or does not light for more than 15 seconds, you should wait at least 1 minute before lighting it again. There is a risk of gas compression and explosion! It is also advisable to ventilate the room before lighting it again.
Possible faults in which the oven does not light, burns badly, or going out

If none of the above tips helped you ignite the gas, there is likely something wrong with the oven. In the experience of our workers, the most common causes of an oven not burning is the following.

Breakdown in the gas control system
The thermocouple with the flame sensor or the solenoid valve that cuts off the gas could have malfunctioned.

The temperature sensor is located far away from the burner
For example, it may have shifted while cleaning it or unprofessional repairs were performed.

Thermostat malfunction
If the thermostat is malfunctioning, the heating level decreases. The temperature sensor detects this drop and the gas control system cuts off the fuel supply in an emergency.

Nozzle clogging in the burner
Carbon deposits clog the nozzle, reducing the gas supply and the flame intensity is not sufficient to heat the temperature sensor. Therefore, the gas control cuts off the gas supply, and the already weak flame goes out.

Broken gas regulator knob
The gas knob mechanism itself can break down due to long use. Try carefully removing the plastic knob by pulling it toward you. Put all the parts together, and don’t lose them! Armed with pliers, press and turn the valve stem – this will open the gas in the oven. Light the oven as usual (with an electric light or a match).

The gas tap is jammed.
This could be due to grease drying out or small particles clogging the turning mechanism.
Switching to a lower pressure gas
In this case, the nozzle is too narrow to maintain the flame.
