Unboxing a brand-new refrigerator is always exciting, but what if the first thing you notice after plugging it in is an odd plastic or chemical smell? Is it just the “new appliance” scent, or a potential red flag that shouldn’t be ignored?

Here’s what you need to know about these odors, when they’re normal, and when they might signal a problem.

The “New Appliance” Smell: What’s Normal?

It’s common for new refrigerators to emit a plastic-like or chemical odor when first installed. These smells typically come from:

  • Manufacturing residues such as plastic protectants or lubricants
  • Packaging materials used during shipping
  • Internal components like shelves, liners, and insulation, which may release light vapors when new
  • Adhesives or sealants used during the construction of the appliance

These odors are often most noticeable when the refrigerator is turned on and begins to cool, as the internal fans circulate air through the compartments.

If the smell is faint, and begins to dissipate after a few days of use and cleaning, there’s usually no cause for concern.

How Long Should the Smell Last?

In most cases, the smell should fade within a week. If you regularly air out the appliance and wipe down the interior surfaces, the odor should become barely noticeable or disappear completely.

To speed up the process, consider the following steps:

  • Clean the interior with a mixture of baking soda and water
  • Leave the doors open (if safe to do so) to ventilate before loading food
  • Place odor absorbers like baking soda, activated charcoal, or coffee grounds inside
  • Discard all packaging materials and remove any plastic film

When Should You Be Concerned?

If the smell persists beyond the first 7–10 days, or becomes stronger, sharper, or foul, you might be dealing with an issue that goes beyond normal off-gassing. Here are a few warning signs to watch for:

1. Burning or Electrical Smell

A burning plastic or ozone-like smell can point to:

  • A faulty electrical component
  • Overheating wiring or circuits
  • A malfunctioning compressor or fan motor

If you detect a burning scent or notice any unusual sounds, flickering lights, or the refrigerator failing to cool properly, unplug it immediately and call a professional technician.

2. Chemical or Solvent Smell That Doesn’t Fade

A sharp chemical smell that lingers could be due to:

  • Refrigerant leaks (especially if accompanied by poor cooling)
  • Inadequate flushing of manufacturing chemicals
  • Improper storage before sale or shipping damage

Refrigerants can be harmful if leaked in enclosed spaces. If you suspect this, ventilate the room and contact a repair service right away.

3. Moldy or Musty Odors

If the smell changes from plastic-like to musty, it may be due to:

  • Moisture accumulation during storage
  • Mold growth in the insulation or tubing
  • Improperly cleaned interior surfaces

This requires thorough disinfection, and in some cases, parts may need to be replaced.

Tips to Prevent and Eliminate Lingering Odors

Even if the smell is harmless, you probably want your fridge to smell clean as quickly as possible. Here’s what you can do:

  • Deep clean before use: Even new appliances benefit from a good wipe-down with vinegar and water or a mild detergent.
  • Ventilate the area: Especially if the appliance was in packaging for a long time.
  • Avoid loading food too soon: Give it 24 hours after cleaning to allow smells to clear.
  • Replace filters: If your fridge has an air filter or water filter, make sure they’re properly installed and fresh.
  • Call for inspection: If you’re unsure whether the smell is normal, it’s best to get a technician’s opinion.

A mild plastic or chemical smell from a brand-new refrigerator is generally not a reason to worry—it’s part of the normal off-gassing process of new materials. However, if the odor persists, becomes worse, or changes in character, it could indicate something more serious such as electrical problems, refrigerant leaks, or mold buildup.

Your peace of mind—and your food safety—are worth acting quickly if something seems off.
